The Benefits of Acting Lessons

Private Lessons

Private lessons provide aspiring actors with a perfect opportunity to hone their craft by identifying and ironing out mistakes and blind spots. You’ll have someone with years of experience in the field guiding you through each poor audition and confidence issue until you reach a better place.

Your private instructor will be able to equip you with some of the tools you need to succeed in the entertainment industry.

For example, you can nail any monologues you have since you can discuss every line with them. If you have any doubts about your delivery or how to project your voice for a specific word or phrase, your coach can step in and help.

On the downside, private classes don’t allow you to react in the same way group classes do. Working with others is a big part of acting, so it’s essential that you work on this aspect of the profession, too. You might also risk getting caught up only in what you’re doing, so you might inadvertently steal the limelight from other cast members if you only focus on yourself.

Pros

  •  Personalized feedback

  •  Opportunities to identify and address blind spots

  •  Better for working on monologues

  •  Can help break through plateaus

Cons

  •  No social interaction or collobaration

  •  There’s a risk of becoming too caught up in your own performance

Group Lessons

Group acting lessons are excellent if you’re a beginner, as they can give you a natural feel for what it’s like to act with others. After all, much of acting is reacting to others and what’s happening around you; group classes recreate that well.

You’ll also find that group classes tend to be slightly less expensive than private classes.

Working with others, you’ll be able to receive peer feedback and develop your ability to socialize and improvise. These are all crucial if you want to succeed as an actor since most of your work will be around others, whether it’s a cast, crew members, or even extras.

The main drawbacks to group acting classes are that you will have less personalized feedback, which can slow down your progress, and fewer opportunities to identify and work through your blind spots and mistakes.

Pros

  •  Better suited to beginners

  •  Often less expensive

  •  Peer feedback

  •  Provides a chance to develop social skills and improvise

Cons

  •  Less personalized feedback

  •  Fewer opportunities to identify your weak points
